Telephone Call

A telephone call refers to the activity in which a calling party dials the phone number of the receiving party and establishes a connection. A telephone call happens when two or more users of telephone sets talk over the telephone. Technically, a telephone call refers to telephony, when remote voice communication is channeled from one point to another using the telephone. To differentiate data and facsimile transmission from a telephone call, the flow of information is called data transmission when it travels through a modem. When the communication device used is a fax machine, this is referred to as facsimile transmission.

A telephone call may be made locally or through long distance. A local telephone call is a phone call which transpires between two or more subscribers within the same area or proximity. A long distance telephone call may be national or international. A national telephone call refers to calls made within the same country but based on locations having different area codes. An international telephone call is a phone call which takes place on different countries. Transmission fees apply to a long distance phone call. These charges are often based on the duration of the telephone call and the geographic areas where both parties are located.

How does a telephone call work?

When a telephone handset is activated, a dial tone can be heard. This informs the caller that the phone line is available for dialing and transmitting a telephone call. Once the phone number of the subscriber being called is keyed in, the caller may hear either a ringback tone or a busy tone. These tones tell the caller when the telephone call is connected (ringback tone) or when the receiving line is occupied. Once the telephone call is over, both parties may place the handset back on the phone cradle. Phone companies enable subscribers to make a telephone call by making network service available.

Why do you need a telephone call?

A telephone call lets you connect and communicate with other people fast. Even with the widespread use of advanced communication devices which allow people to exchange messages and information through various means, telephone calls remain to be the fastest means of getting a response. Besides, a telephone call is more personal. It lets you talk to the other person as if you are just nearby. With the emergence of video phones, you even get to see the person as you speak. A telephone call bridges the gap created by time and distance. It would be hard to imagine the world without telephone calls.
