How Natural History Became A Beer Label

A TELEPHONE call from an ad agency asking for a good image to put on a beer label is not the kind of inquiry a natural history illustrator gets every day.
University of Newcastle conjoint senior lecturer Christine Sanders remembers when she got the call that led to a student's works ending up on the bottle for Blue Tongue brewery's drop. The beautiful drawing of a blue tongue lizard by Greg Slevin is one of the works on show at a new exhibition that opens at the Lovett Gallery tonight. The story is a good example of how the university's highly successful degree in natural history illustration has survived for 30 years and outlasted three vice-chancellors, Ms Sanders says."We have survived all the changes," she said. The course was introduced in 1979 by the late Professor Graham Gilchrist as part of the university's fine arts degree. Since then an estimated 300 students have graduated. The show, Drawn from Nature, will run until Saturday, March 22.
